The Canyons’ claim to fame is that they are the largest ski resort in Utah with almost 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) of ski terrain. Canyons Resort covers nine mountain peaks with maximum elevation of 9,990 ft (3,040 m) on Peak 9990. The large amount of terrain has 182 trails, five bowls, six natural halfpipes, and three terrain parks.[3] Side mountain and backcountry skiing on the surrounding National Forest land can be accessed through gates found on some of the peaks. Since 2010 Canyons has hosted an annual race as part of the Sprint Grand Prix of Skicross and Snowboardcross.
In the summer Canyons Resort has an extensive trail system open for mountain biking or hiking. The resort also operates two zip lines and a miniature golf course.
As with most four-season resorts, Canyons Resort has numerous upscale dining, shopping, and lodging options. The village also hosts many concerts throughout the year at its outdoor amphitheater.. It is a super mega-resort with eight mountain peaks, and is one of the largest ski areas in the US.
The ski area opened as Park City West in 1968, a sister resort to the nearby Park City Mountain Resort, opened five years earlier. It was renamed ParkWest in 1975 after a change in ownership, and the name was changed again in 1995 to Wolf Mountain for two seasons, then became The Canyons in 1997
The Canyons ski terrain provides plenty of diversity for all ability levels, but it has a bias towards the advanced and expert rider. There is easily accessed out-of-bounds skiing, but there’s enough in-bounds terrain such that you don’t need to ski the same run twice. Highlights of the terrain include the great fall-line cruisers of varying pitch, and the impressive tree skiing in the well gladed areas. Snowboarders are definitely welcome at The Canyons, and with many natural half-pipes and two terrain parks, there’s plenty on offer for shredders.
The Canyons resort is one of three ski resorts in the Park City area, Utah, and is located only 54km (34 miles) from Salt Lake City airport.
For such a large ski area, the main part of the village is surprisingly small. The sterile modern village basically consists of three large hotels and the buildings and shops associated with them. There is a hive of activity at a couple of bars at après time, and after that the village turns into a sleepy little hollow.
Accommodation at The Canyons resort is somewhat limited, but is of great quality and is conveniently located slope-side. Some visitors to The Canyons stay in Park City which is only a few kilometres away, and is easily accessed by a free shuttle service. Park City provides more variety for nightlife, dining and shopping.
The Canyons has something on offer for everyone, and as such, the resort attracts an eclectic crowd. Families, old-timers, ski bums, and young dudes all love The Canyons. The Canyons is worthy of its mega-resort status - loads and loads of terrain, good lift infrastructure, and of course the fabulous snow that Utah is famous for."
