FROM JUNE TO OCTOBER SKI IN NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand has developed a deserved reputation as an international skiing destination. The season runs from June to October, the landscapes and scenery are out of this world and gear is easy to hire. New Zealand ski fields are uncrowded with plenty of wide-open bowls and  gentle slopes for first-time skiers and off-piste skiing  and heli-skiing for the more adventurous.

The South Island has nine commercial ski fields within easy reach of Queenstown or Christchurch. Expect dramatic scenery, fantastic snow and diverse runs.

The North Island's Mt Ruapehu, with its two commercial fields, is the country''s only skiable volcano. With wide open plains, rivers and awe-inspiring mountains Mt Ruapehu isn’t your usual alpine destination. Probably because the ski fields are on a volcano! Whakapapa's dedicated beginner’s area, Happy Valley, is great for learning and kids. Old lava flows make great natural half-pipes and challenging terrain for intermediates and experts.

Turoa, on the south-western side, caters for beginners to advanced, and snowboarders will love the dedicated terrain park. Mt Ruapehu lift passes give you access to both areas and the bustling town of Ohakune is a great place to base yourself. Part of the World Heritage Tongariro National Park, the scenery here is breathtaking. On your days off the snow, hire a mountain bike, take a walk through a pristine forest or relax on a golf course.

The Christchurch – Canterbury region stretches from ocean to Alps, contrasting sweeping plains and mountain peaks. Just 1 ½ hours from Christchurch and 30 minutes from Methven, Mt Hutt is a giant amongst giants that boasts the longest ski season in New Zealand. Nearby Porters is a haven for skiiers of all abilities.

Once you've explored around Christchurch, head to the wide open landscapes of Mount Cook Mackenzie, a favourite road trip destination. Along with stunning Lake Tekapo and the soaring heights of Aoraki Mount Cook, this area boasts a number of boutique ski fields, so you can enjoy a wide variety of exciting slopes.

Mount Cook Mackenzie, a region of sprawling countryside providing a variety of delectable groomed trails, backcountry skiing and freestyle parks. Experience diverse runs at Mt Dobson, Roundhill and Ohau ski fields.

Get ready for scenery that redefines spectacular, including the cosy township of Lake Tekapo – an alpine retreat and photographer’s dream come true. When you're not skiing, you might like to visit New Zealand's tallest mountain and longest glacier, have a soak in natural hot springs, or go stargazing in the world's newest UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve.
